An experiment with “13 women and 1 man” was conducted to report on the effectiveness of essential oils for tiredness. The conclusions were beautiful. Inhaling an essential oil blend did cut down levels of burnout and tiredness.

Why stay worn-out and slouchy when you can bubble with vitality? I’ll outline some of the best essential oils you can try, along with recipes to pep up your vibes.

Best Essential Oils For Energy

For whatever reason you’re tired and need to boost your energy, these essential oils will help to get the job done. Your home will smell heavenly, and you’ll get the kick you need.

1. Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum / Verum)

The Egyptians knew what they were about when they used this warming oil extensively; it does give tiredness a run for its money. Cinnamon essential oil helps tired souls, like you, cope with the harsh ins and outs of the day.

Are you suffering from mental exhaustion or debility? Not only does cinnamon essential oil promotes well being and emotional balance, but it can provide the kick you need to act.

For your very own energy booster, use cinnamon essential oil to wash and warm your tired feet. Simply add 1-2 drops of cinnamon essential oil to a tablespoon of whole milk. Add this mixture to your bath, and you’re good to go.

2. Coriander Essential Oil (Coriandrum Sativum)

The restorative properties of the herbal-scented tonic may strengthen and invigorate your bones.

By applying this essential oil, you’ll gradually increase in mental strength. The revitalizing action of the oil will leave you feeling revived and refreshed. Talk about coming back to life!

Use coriander essential oil as a massage oil to invigorate your limbs with energy. Add about  1 – 2 drops of oil to 2 tsp. of base oil of choice and massage onto the skin.

3. Cumin Essential Oil (Cuminum Cyminum)

What do you do when lethargy comes knocking? Embrace cumin essential oil when those moods of sluggishness strike.

Cumin essential oil provides a tonic effect to its users that may relieve fragility.

To help with fatigue and sluggishness, cumin essential oil is best added to a diffuser to infiltrate the air. Add 2 – 3 drops of oil to your diffuser and allow the oil’s stimulating fragrance to help you kick lethargy to the curb.

4. Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber Officinale)

The essential oil derived from the root of the plant through steam distillation can be used to animate the mind. It helps to relieve mental confusion, nervous weariness, and physical tiredness.

As you indulge in using this essential oil within your home, allow the tonic effect to raise your energy and improve your wellbeing.

Combine 1 teaspoon of St. John’s wort (Hypericum Perforatum) or any other base oil of choice with 2 drops of ginger oil. Combine the oils well and rub soothingly at the temples and pulse points.

5. Grapefruit Essential Oil (Citrus x Paradisi)

Grapefruit essential oil is the pick-me-up you need when your energy level sinks like an anchor.

The zesty fragrance of the oil can impart vigor and enthusiasm to your soul. It’s the spunk you add to your day after your ‘pain in the rear’ boss gives you a rough time at the office.

The air you inhale can have a tremendous effect on your mental state. Musty and stale air could dampen your mental strength. Use grapefruit essential oil as a room spray to clear moldy air and improve your mental energy.

In a spray bottle, combine 5 – 6 drops of oil with a few drops of water and shake well before spraying.

6. Helichrysum Essential Oil  (Helichrysum Italicum, Angustifolium)

Helichrysum, also dubbed immortelle, is the everlasting oil that rejuvenates the mind and body. The essential oil works wonders for the nervous system, as it helps to relieve conditions such as weakness, lethargy, and nervous tiredness.

Think about all those potential energy sappers you encounter daily, and fantasize how immortelle can stymie their attack on you. There’s no better feeling than regaining that bull-like energy to tackle life’s anxieties.

As soon as you feel those sluggish feelings crouching at the door, quickly add 4 drops of oil to your diffuser to  repel them. There’s no place within your home for tiredness!

7. Lemongrass Essential Oil (Cymbopogon Citratus)

Lemongrass essential oil acts as a tonic and stimulant. The tonic property of the essential oil adds strength to weakened muscle tissues through massage. As a stimulant, it incites the mind to beat exhaustion.

Because lemongrass essential oil can be used to tone important system functions and accommodate absorption, it may improve your physical strength.

The nervine action of lemongrass essential oil is said to assist with various nervous disorders such as sluggishness. Lemongrass is also seen as a confidence and self-esteem booster, which may improve mental strength and fortitude.

Add 4 drops of oil to your diffuser to elevate your spirit and ward off tiredness.

8. Pine (Scotch) Essential Oil (Pinus Sylvestris)

In folk tradition, the soaked shoots of scotch pine were used to relieve nervous exhaustion.  Today, the essential oil boasts a similar function; the scent is known to relieve tiredness and restore one’s energy.

The essential oil is ideal for use after engaging in strength-sapping activities such as exercising.

Scotch pine essential oil is most effective when used as an air freshener. Combine 60 ml of vodka and 2 fl. oz of water with 20 – 30 drops of scotch pine essential oil.  Use in a spray bottle. Shake well before spraying.

9. Rosemary Essential Oil (Rosmarinus Officinalis)

The essential oil is seen as a wonder therapy because of the many hats worn. It’s not only a stimulant that floods the body with energy, but it’s restorative. After traveling for a few hours, your mind and body could be left jaded.

Rosemary essential oil can be used as a therapy for jet lag. It enhances alertness and concentration after feeling drained.

Combine 50 drops of rosemary essential oil with 100 ml of un-perfumed shower gel. Mix the blend well and use in the shower. This blend is perfect for post workouts.

10. Sage (Spanish) Essential Oil (Salvia Lavendulaefolia)

The sage oil is said to have a tonic effect on the nervous system. That means it can stimulate and renew your energy bank when you’re running low.

I call Spanish sage the pressure oil. This is because it gives your body the energy it needs when you’re tired and under fire.

To a basin, add water. Combine 5 drops of Spanish sage, 1 tablespoon of milk and this mixture to the water. Allow your feet to immerse for about 15 minutes and then dry completely with a cloth.

11. Angelica Seed Essential Oil (Angelica Archangelica)

Angelica essential oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant. It’s passionately called ‘oil of the angels’ because of its ability to elevate one’s energy.

If you feel your mental faculties need a bolster, angelica is the essential oil that’ll help you ‘find yourself’.

To use as a massage oil, add 2 – 3 drops of angelica to a tablespoon of your preferred base oil and massage into the soles of your feet.

12. Elemi Essential Oil (Canarium Luzonicum)

If elemi essential oil could be used traditionally to preserve the dead in Egypt, it can raise and restore your tired soul. The oil is derived from the tree’s gum through steam distillation.

The stimulant effects of the oil, coupled with its fortifying action, makes it ideal to kick nervous exhaustion to the curb.

Using elemi in your topical cream is simple. Add 2 – 3 drops to an un-perfumed cream and use before bedtime or during the evenings when you wish to top up your energy level.

13. Black Pepper Essential Oil (Piper Nigrum)

In addition to its potent antiseptic properties, black pepper essential oil has a stimulating action that keeps tired minds going. This warm and spicy-scented oil packs quite a punch with its ability to build stamina and improve motivation.

The oil enhances alertness and focus, while getting your mind out of a funk to beat fatigue.

If you’re feeling a bit haggard and you’ve lost the power to ‘act’, black pepper essential oil can put that pep in your step. To your diffuser or oil burner, add 4 drops of the oil and allow it to permeate the air for about 10 – 15 minutes.

3 Essential Oil Recipes For Energy And Exhaustion

Mental tiredness and energy sappers do not sound an alarm when they’re ready to invade your life. It’s best to prepare in advance for them. With these powerful essential oil recipes, you’ll be given the ammunition you need to fight back, rather than sit energy-less at home.

With just the right blends, you’ll have more vim and vigor to do the things you love.

Refreshing Diffuser Blend

Each essential oil within this blend has a unique effect that perfectly complements the components of the other. It rejuvenates, revives, and uplifts a dog-tired soul.

  • 2 drops of peppermint
  • 1 drop of eucalyptus
  • 2 drops of pine

Add the peppermint, eucalyptus, and pine essential oil as recommended to your diffuser to bring this energy boosting blend to life. You can also try a blend variation with other stimulating essential oils such lemongrass, rosemary, and others.

This refreshing blend is ideal for use in a diffuser, vaporizer, or oil burner after a long day at the office. Sit for about 10 – 15 minutes where the oils are diffused and allow your mind and body to restore its energy.

*Avoid using peppermint close to babies and young children.

Uplifting Candles

Instead of buying those mood-altering candles, why not get creative and make your own? Bear in mind that not all essential oils work well in a candle, so unless you have someone to consult, it’s best to stick with the recipe I provide below.

  • 10 drops of Lemongrass
  • 5 drops of lime
  • 5 drops of Basil
  • 90g (3oz )of candle wax of choice.

To melt the candle wax, use a bain marie saucepan or place the wax in a heatproof bowl. Add boiling water to a saucepan and let the bowl (with the wax) sit on top to have a hot water bath. This will easily melt the candle wax.

Fasten a prewaxed wick in the middle of two little wooden sticks. Use two rubber bands to hold the wooden sticks together on both ends. Attach a wax button to the end of the prewaxed wick and let it sit in the middle of a sterile glass/bowl/mold.

The wooden sticks should form a bridge-like structure above the bowl. The wick should be hanging with the attached wax button at the bottom. Add the combined essential oil to the wax and blend well. You can transfer the mixture – not more than half – into a pitcher to be easily poured out.

Pour the wax into the mold and allow it to set and cool.

Energizing Mineral Bath

This essential oil blend is just the bath you need to reclaim your push and energy. A mixture of herbs, essential oils, and salts is the exciting remedy that’ll reduce fatigue and add some dynamism to your day.

  • 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt.
  • 1 drop of black pepper
  • 2 drops of tea tree
  • 500 ml of water
  • 2 drops of peppermint
  • 1 tablespoon of dried peppermint herb.
  • 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary herb.

Infuse the peppermint and rosemary herbs by allowing them to brew for approximately 10 minutes.

Strain the liquid.

Combine the essential oils with the Epsom salts.

Combine the mixture from step 3 with the herbal infusion.

Stir and allow the blend to set.

This energizing mineral blend is best used as a bath infusion. Simply add the blend immediately to your bath after it dissolves and bathe as normal.

*Avoiding using peppermint and rosemary essential oil close to young children.
